A New Zealand-based company has been ordered by US and Australian regulators to pull a Pfizer-branded erectile dysfunction drug from the market.
Pfizer’s Viagra, also sold as Viagra in the US, was introduced in November last year and is not approved for sale in the US.
The Pfizer product is being withdrawn from the market, and it is expected to be sold in Australia for around one year after the drug was approved for sale in the US.
The drug, which Pfizer previously launched in Europe, had not been shown to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction, and it is being marketed in the US for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and other conditions.
Pfizer said in a statement that it would not be marketing the product to patients in the US, and said it would seek approval for other countries where Viagra is approved.
It also said it had contacted the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to confirm that it had received an approval for Viagra for sale in the US.
In a statement, Pfizer said: “Pfizer has received a positive response to an FDA review on Viagra and has not made any changes to our regulatory regime. The company’s decision to withdraw Viagra from the market is based on an analysis of our regulatory environment and the company’s complete regulatory strategy.”
Pfizer’s decision to halt the sale of Viagra comes after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December had granted approval for a new drug to treat erectile dysfunction.
The FDA has also granted Pfizer exclusive rights to manufacture Viagra and the US firm’s Viagra portfolio. The company is also under an obligation to pay to Pfizer for any additional payments or licensing and commercialisation rights it may have.
The approval was due to come into effect immediately following the product’s FDA approval in the US. Pfizer had said it was seeking approval for a new product to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
In a statement, Pfizer said: “We are aware of a number of pending product approvals and are reviewing them carefully and are confident that this product will be of benefit to patients in the US and in Australia.”
In December, Pfizer said it was seeking approval for a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) to treat high blood pressure in patients with mild to moderate PAH and an enlarged heart. The company added that it was reviewing the drug’s approval and is awaiting the results of an FDA review.
Pfizer is still developing Viagra, which is based on the company’s Viagra patent, but it has been expected to be approved for sale for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the US and for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
It is expected to be available in Australia for a year or longer.
PfizerPfizer has said that its patent for Viagra was valid until December 30, 2017, but the patent was not renewed and therefore will be subject to a 180 day stay. Pfizer is also under an obligation to pay to the US FDA for any additional payments or commercialisation rights it may have.
